Food insecurity in America isn’t a distant problemโit’s happening on our own streets, in homes that look like everyone else’s. Many times, unbeknownst to us, it’s happening in the homes of our neighbors and friends. In 2023, 47 million people, including 14 million children, experienced food insecurity, the highest level in nearly a decade. Among older Americans, the picture is just as urgent: an estimated 7.4 million seniors age 60 and older experienced food insecurity as of 2023.
Behind those numbers are grandparents choosing between medicine and groceries, and kids heading to school with empty stomachs. These are the neighbors the Jacara LaBelle Foundation exists to serve. Alleviating hunger among our most vulnerableโour children and our eldersโsits at the very heart of our mission. We believe access to a nourishing meal is not a privilege, but a basic dignity every person deserves.
What gives us hope is this: you don’t need to run a national organization to make a real difference. Some of the most powerful change starts with one person and one meal.
Prepare a meal. Organizations like Meals on Wheels have shown for decades how a single home-cooked dish can nourish both body and spirit. You can cook for a homebound senior, contribute to a community meal train, or simply prepare extra to share with a struggling family nearby.
Deliver a meal. For many seniors, mobilityโnot just moneyโis the barrier to eating well. An hour of your time delivering food can mean the difference between a full plate and an empty one, and that knock on the door often becomes the only friendly visit in someone’s day.
Grow a garden. Following the model of community gardens nationwide, a shared plot of land can feed dozens of families. Imagine donating every harvestโfresh tomatoes, greens, and herbsโfree to those who need it most. It’s food security planted right in your own backyard.
Hunger is solvable. Research shows hunger amongst our senior population could rise to 9 million by 2050 if we do nothingโbut that future isn’t inevitable. When neighbors show up for neighbors, the trajectory changes. WE change it.Together.
So here’s our invitation: volunteer your hands, support our mission with a gift, and share this message so others can join us. Every meal prepared, every plate delivered, every seed planted moves us closer to a community where no child or senior goes to bed hungry.
Together, we can fill the gap.
